She wants stability. He wants spontaneity. What they need is each other. Colin O’Bryan cashed out of the software company he founded and started a new life in Ireland. Content to wander from town to town as a traveling musician, he had no goals beyond healing from the betrayals that led to his career change, and finding his next gig. After the death of her parents, Rachel Sullivan hoped her aunt’s B&B on the Southern coast of Ireland would be a place for her to settle and start a new life. Though she can’t deny the sparks in Colin’s touch, his lack of concern for hearth and home leave her torn. Can this free-spirited minstrel win her heart or will Rachel choose roots and stability over love? This gentle inspirational romance will take you on a journey to Cork County, Ireland and give you a glimpse of Kinsale, Charles Fort, Blarney Castle, and Cobh as Rachel and Colin undergo their own journey of self-discovery as they learn that God's plans are bigger than their own and that waiting on Him is worth the insecurity it brings.

Rachel hopes to find a home and sense of purpose at her Aunt Siobhan's B&B in Kinsale, Ireland, but things don't go as planned; she also meets traveling musician Colin, who confuses her.

(Though reviews are inherently subjective, I prefer to provide some organization to my opinions through the use of a personal rubric. The following notes may contain spoilers.)

Plot and Setting: 4 -- Plot has unique elements and no major holes, but a few shaky bits and/or a slight lack of focus. Characters and events didn't always go as I expected, which I actually rather liked for the most part, though there were a few diversions from my expectations that bothered me some. The drama with Colin's ex, and all that went along with it, was my main annoyance. It was made to feel like a big issue, but I'm not sure why. Setting is clear, believable, and consistent. Timeline may be a bit hard to follow; I wasn't often sure what month it was or how much time was passing.

Characters: 4 -- Main characters are relatable, realistic, interesting, and dynamic. Both Rachel and Colin had pretty fixed ideas of their own plans, but when things didn't turn out as expected for either of them, they find new goals, separately and together. Not real sure why hearing about Colin's ex stirs up Rachel's insecurities, as he seems fairly clearly over her. Minor characters may be slightly stereotyped or simplified. We gets hints about Siobhan and Patrick's love of their work and each other, but not much more. Definite strong points in the relationships between characters. Frequent mention of wanting to help family and friends, and being drawn to someone who feels like home.

Mechanics and Writing: 4.5 -- Few, if any, typos or word errors. Good use of alternating POV. Generally skillful writing. Some good pictures of Ireland, without feeling extremely travel-book-ish.

Redeeming Value: 4 -- Partially focused uplifting themes or lessons. Home is more people than place; our first plans are not always the best ones, and it's sometimes good when things don't work out at we expect. Sex, alcohol, violence, etc, are not glorified at all. Physical attraction is mentioned, but is not the be-all and end-all.

Personal Enjoyment: 3.5 -- I liked it. It was enjoyable and entertaining. I’d enjoy reading it again.

Kinsale Kisses An Irish Romance Elizabeth Maddrey 9780692310922 Books Reviews

An "Irish Romance" by someone who has actually been to Ireland! I loved the setting, and yes, Ireland really is that beautiful and yes, what she described as being necessary to kiss the famed "Blarney Stone" is what you really must go through to do it. A sweet, but predictable-- and clean-- romance, great for a quick Sunday afternoon read. Our heroine routinely jumps to conclusions a bit too early, and the course of the hero's career was left up in the air, but I thought it was well written by a bright person. Could be fleshed out and turned into a full-size novel with more character development--including more background in the stories of the supporting characters also. 3.5 stars due to good quality editing. Teenagers will also enjoy it. My first read from this author and I can recommend it.
Rachel Sullivan’s father died leaving the business in shambles, due to her mother’s long illness and death. She moves to Ireland to help her elderly aunt with her bed and breakfast, but she soon sees the efficient little lady doesn’t need her. She meets Colin O’Bryan, an American who’s become a vagabond musician. His touch does things to her, but she can’t tolerate his wandering lifestyle. She needs organized permanence -- doesn’t she?

Colin had sold his half of the software company when Jessica, his partner and girlfriend sold him out. How could he have been so wrong about someone? Apparently, he didn’t understand women and was no good at relationships. He would settle down again someday, but, for now, the adventure of traveling the world suited him. However, would Jessica suit him more? But will she accept him for who he is or continue to judge him as unsuitable?

I absolutely loved this book until it got to the end. It was clean and has wonderful details that give a real flavor of Ireland. It took me back to my visit there and rekindled fond memories. I also loved the characters. It ended okay, but the ending was so rushed it was barely there. Although the author is new to me, she is too good to not have a strong conclusion, when the rest of the book was excellent.
Kinsale Kisses is an inspirational romance with a great message. The part where Colin tells Rachel that God always listens, even when we think that He doesn't, really touched my heart. I've never read a novel set in Ireland, and the author does a great job describing different sightseeings, sometimes with a touch of humor. Frankly, I don't think I'd do what it takes to kiss the Blarney Stone! The characters of Colin and Rachel are well developed. This is one of the classic cases of "opposites attract." She wants a plan, stability, and a place she can call home. He seems content traveling from town to town and singing for his meal. After his girlfriend Jessica decided she didn't love him anymore and proved it well by making a deal behind his back, Colin figured he wasn't good at relationships. But Colin and Rachel can't fight their growing attraction to each other... I liked how Colin helped Rachel grow in her faith. I recommend this book.
