Sometimes going home means leaving everything you have ever known. When the doctor pronounces "incurable cancer" and gives Bobbie Blake one year to live, she agrees to accompany her niece, Tracie, on a trip back to Austria, back to The Oasis, a ministry center for refugees that Bobbie helped start twenty years earlier. Back to where there are so many memories of love and loss. Bobbie and Tracie are moved by the plight of the refugees and in particular, the story of the Iranian Hamid, whose young daughter was caught with a New Testament in her possession back in Iran, causing Hamid to flee along the refugee Highway and putting the whole family in danger. Can a network of helpers bring the family to safety in time? And at what cost? Filled with action, danger, heartache and romance, The Long Highway Home is a hymn to freedom in life's darkest moments.

The Long Highway Home by Elizabeth Musser
Wow. A book that causes me to think deeply, learn more about a subject, learn a new way to pray, while not being able to put the book down, is the sign of an excellent book. The Long Highway Home did all of those things and more as I was drawn into this compelling story. I wanted to read this one now more than ever with the increase in refugee crisis situations. The endorsement of the book by Scott Olson, a leader of a global non-profit that works with refugees all over the world, was powerful. While this is fiction, he said that the book “accurately portrays the perils and miracles that are experienced along the refugee highway.” There are many reasons that refugees flee their home country, the main reason in this story was for freedom of religion. Living in the United States, while our religious freedom has come under attack in recent years, it does not compare to the utter and complete lack of freedom in other countries. Thank you Elizabeth Musser for this beautiful accurate portrayal of refugees trying to escape oppression, and all the dangers, heartaches and joys on the journey. It is also a spiritual journey of doubt, fear, faith and trust. Thank you for the missionary work you do. I highly recommend this book.

The Long Highway Home Elizabeth Musser 9781542362726 Books Reviews

I thoroughly enjoyed this book as I have all the others Mrs. Musser wrote. I believe I've read them all. In fact I was in the process of reading another book when I discovered this new story. I immediately stopped reading the other story, bought The Long Highway Home and started reading. So glad I did. Loved every word. I pray it bring a harvest of workers into all aspects of the ministry to all refugees needing to know Jesus.
I have loved Elizabeth Musser ‘s books for a long time, and our book club has read several, including The Swam House, and even took a field trip to Atlanta to visit it!
This book really impacted me, as it brought the refugee crisis to life. The characters and events all seemed very true to life. This is our book club selection for this month, and I’m looking forward to great discussion! Thank you, Elizabeth Musser, for writing such rich books which build and affirm the Christian faith!
Great story - gives a beautiful, personal, and sobering look into the issue of refugees and resettlement that faces our time. No doubt written with people of faith in mind, but the fact is, these are often the people out there quietly helping people in these desperate situations, showing them the love of Christ regardless of the refugee's own faith. She also depicts believers as real people, with wounds and shortcomings, with the emphasis on how God's grace impacts each person at his/her point of need.
In this page-turning novel, Musser looks at the refugee issue from every angle that of the refugee, the family surviving in the refugee's country, those helping refugees, as well a journalist. I couldn't put it down and before I was half way through, I ordered a copy for my mother for Christmas. If you are interested at all in this issue, this fact-based novel is a must read! If you aren't interested, you will be by the end of this compelling book!
I needed this book. As America tries to protect itself, all immigrants from the spiritually-oppressed countries are being lumped together. True refugees who have put their hope in Christ make daring escapes from their own governments who will kill them for it. The others are coming with a mission of harm to the West and we are not permitted to discern who is who.
Thank you, Elizabeth Musser, for the heart rending story softening a reader who needs to see every one of them in the verse "God so loved The World...." Well written and powerful novel.
I absolutely love Elizabeth Musser's writing! I get lost in her characters' lives, rooting fiercely for them, crying when they hurt, and cheering when they triumph. This book is no exception. I was immediately drawn into the story line, one that is both timeless and timely for today. As an Atlantan, I love how my city is woven into the story, but it serves as only one of many locales that was visited in the book. This is a story of loss, of pain and woundedness, of searching and finding, and ultimately, of the power of love to persevere. What resonates most deeply from this book are the ties that bind us to each other are a part of a beautiful tapestry, weaving together lives from various countries, ages, and religious beliefs. Musser fans will not be disappointed!
This was one of those terrible books where 20% into it you already know it will be too short. And it is. And I should not have read the last part on the train. People stare when you are crying.
Best part of the book is that it really tells the whole story the decision to leave and why, the long and dangerous journey, the (non) welcome, the family coming later, the fears, the uncertainties. We so often forget that every refugee has that story, that they are not just unwanted foreigners, but real people, with a real life before they became refugees, with a family, a decision-making process, a long and dangerous journey (as every Hassan, Hussein, Mahmood, Muhammad, Ali, Abdel and Abdullah I've met over the years here in Rome, Italy, could tell you), but also the endless waiting for documents to be processed, without a job, a family or study (other than language) to take your mind of your troubles, the depression, PTSD in short, people like you and me, with a lot more suffering in their young lives than you or I (generally speaking) have experienced.
Thank you, Elizabeth, for giving their story to them, and as Scott Olsen said a book every (Christian) person who is afraid of refugees should read.
